Why You Should Use Coconut Coir for Mulch in Your Organic Garden

January 22nd, 2011 by Organic Green Thumb

coconut coir, organic gardening, backyard garden,Using mulch in your organic garden is a vital part of organic gardening. When you mulch around the plants in your organic garden it helps retain the moisture in the soil essential to healthy plants. It will also keep sunlight from reaching those pesky weed seeds which may be mixed in the soil around your fruits and veggies and help keep them from sprouting up! This will save you a ton of time since you won’t need to water or weed your garden nearly so often.

Coconut Coir is an ideal mulch. It is completely organic made from the compressed fibers of the coconut shell. It is disease resistant, pH neutral, holds 8 to 10 times its weight in water and is 100% weed free. Coconut Coir comes in compact easy to store and handle compressed bricks. Even the most spaced challenged gardeners can have an ample supply on hand. Best of all Coconut Coir is also a great soil amendment, so when it comes time to work up the soil and add compost and new plants, the Coconut Coir can be mixed right in and will dramatically improve the texture of your soil. If you have sandy soil it will help improve moisture retention and if you have heavy clay it will help improve drainage. Coconut Coir really is a versatile product that every gardener should try!

Raised Bed Gardens the Lazy Gardeners Dream!

January 9th, 2011 by Organic Green Thumb

raised bed gardening, organic gardening, garden organicLove fresh fruits and vegetables but hate the work? Raised bed gardens are the answer. If you install your raised bed garden properly tilling and weeding are almost completely eliminated. Just follow these simple steps and you will be on your way to raising fresh organic fruits and vegetables the lazy way before you know it!

  • Pick a spot that gets at 6 or more hours of direct sunlight
  • Determine what size & height bed works for you
    • Taller beds mean less digging during installation and less bending or kneeling when maintaining
    • If you choose a lower sided bed you will need to dig out the ground inside your bed so the total bed depth is at least 8 to 12″
  • Build your raised bed. I highly recommend Orcaboard Raised Bed Gardens they are easy to assemble come with a 50 year manufacturers warranty and are a beautiful addition to your landscape!
  • Once your bed is built and in place line the bottom with a weed barrier, I use a thick layer of old news papers, they are an environmentally friendly barrier that works great and by the time they degrade so will the weed seeds that might have come up below them
  • Since we are talking about being a lazy gardener fill your raised bed with a rich organic soil which has been certified as free of weed seeds
  • Plant your favorite fruits and vegetables
  • If you are starting from seed as soon as the plants are a few inches tall mulch around them to keep water in and weeds out, I recommend using coconut coir click here to see all the benefits of using coconut coir
  • Water regularily
  • Pick and enjoy!

Come back often as we will be filling these pages with all kinds of tips and ideas to help make sure your organic garden is a successful one! So help keep the Earth Green One Organic Garden at a Time!
